Frequently Asked Questions

Concrete slabs are highly recommended for level sites and warm climates. In colder climates, concrete slabs are not recommended as the slab can move. However, In Auckland, where the temperature is mild and the ground doesn’t freeze, concrete slabs are ideal.

The area is prepped so it is flat. If drainage needs to be improved crushed gravel is placed. Then after the area is boxed, the concrete is poured on site. For strength the slab is made thicker at the edges. To strengthen the edges, the slab is thicker. For a house foundation you’ll need to get a separate contractor to do the preparation work before we lay the concrete.

Although concrete is very strong, there are limits to the amount of weight it can take. To prevent movement, wire mesh and steel reinforced rods are placed within the concrete. These assist in strengthening the concrete as it dries.

Cracks occur when water evaporates and hardens and the concrete shrinks. If the slab dries to quickly tiny cracks called crazing can also appear on the surface. These do not affect the structure of the slab.

To minimise cracks and prevent them widening, wire mesh is laid within the site where the concrete will be poured. Sunset Concrete Ltd also avoids pouring concrete during very hot weather and at the hottest times of day to minimise crazing.

You can walk on the slab the next day but we recommend staying off it for at least seven days to allow the concrete to fully cure and harden. Our team will tape off the area while it is drying to stop people walking on it accidentally.
